Medicare 5-Star Rating System

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) annually rates how well Medicare health and drug plans perform in different categories. The number of stars shows how well our plan performs.  Different Medicare grading categories include detecting and preventing illness, ratings from patients, patient safety, drug pricing and customer service, as well as quality of care, access to care, and responsiveness of the health plan. This is what CMS refers to as the Medicare Star Rating.

Original Medicare Coverage

Original Medicare comes in three parts — Part A, Part B and Part D.

  • Medicare Part A helps pay for such services as hospital stays, home health care, extended care, and hospice.  You qualify for Part A if you or your spouse worked 40 quarters and paid social security tax.  Enrollment is automatic.
  • Medicare Part B helps pay for physician services, laboratory tests, outpatient hospital services, and medical equipment. Part B is optional, but most Medicare beneficiaries receive both Parts A and B. Medicare doesn’t cover everything such as health care outside of the US, and prescription drugs.  You need to enroll in Part B (typically prior to your 65th birthday or prior to leaving group coverage).  There is a monthly premium cost for Part B (typically this premium is deducted from your Social Security check each month).
  • Medicare Part D is offered through private insurance companies, like RMHP, and it helps pay for prescription drugs you receive at the pharmacy. You choose the drug plan and pay a monthly premium.  Like other insurance, if you decide not to enroll in a Medicare Part D drug plan when you are first eligible, you may pay a penalty if you choose to join at a later time.

When to Enroll in Medicare
Enrollment into Medicare is done through the Social Security Administration. RMHP is available to help you understand Medicare so you are fully aware of your choices and options. You can enroll:

  • When you first become eligible for Medicare, during the period that starts the three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after the month you turn 65.
  • If you get Medicare due to a disability, you can join three months before and after your 24th month of cash disability benefits.
  • During the Annual Enrollment Period, if you already have Medicare.  The Annual Enrollment Period for 2011 is October 15th through December 7th to be effective January 1, 2012.
  • If you did not enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period and do not qualify for a Special Enrollment period, or if you dropped coverage previously, you can enroll from January 1 through March 31 of each year for an effective date of July 1 of the same year.
  • During other times, due to special circumstances.
  • Once you are eligible for Medicare Part A and have enrolled in Medicare Part B you can enroll in an RMHP Medicare Plan to help you maximize your Medicare coverage at an affordable cost.

Two Colorado Coverage Options to Consider
Original Medicare helps with many health care costs. However, it does not cover everything. That’s why many people also purchase supplemental insurance or look for other options to cover their out-of-pocket hospital and doctor bills.

1. RMHP Medicare Cost Plans
An option to help you save money and ensure you get the care you need is through an RMHP Medicare Cost plan. RMHP has contracted with Medicare since 1977, and Colorado Medicare beneficiaries may apply regardless of age, as long as they live in our service area.

RMHP Medicare Cost plans not only provide all services covered by Medicare Parts A, B, and D, but also offer additional coverage and benefits.

  • Emergency and urgent care when you travel (some plans cover worldwide)
  • An extensive network of doctors
  • The choice to use any specialist or hospital without a referral
  • The ability to see any doctor outside of the RMHP network for Medicare-covered services.  Original Medicare will pay for its share of the charges, and you will pay the beneficiary share of the charges.
Speak with one of our licensed Medicare Sales Specialists now for more information about the benefits of choosing one of our Medicare Cost plans. Call 888-251-1330 (TTY: 711), 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Mountain Time, 7 days a week

Sorry, but RMHP does not offer a Medicare Cost plan in Baca county.

2. Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap)

  • Medicare supplemental insurance plans or Medigap insurance plans are offered by private insurance companies. Some supplemental plans will pay for all of the Medicare coinsurance amounts. Some plans may also cover Medicare’s deductibles.
  • Certain plans will also pay for preventive care and emergency medical care in a foreign country.
  • Medicare Part D benefits are not covered by a Supplemental Medigap Plan. If you choose this option and need Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits, you will have to sign up for a separate drug plan.
  • Medigap plans may have requirements for you to qualify for acceptance by taking a physical. The Medicare supplemental insurance rates may increase as your age increases on these plans.
  • RMHP offers Medigap insurance plans A, C, F, G, and N.

RMHP's contract is renewed annually. The availability of coverage beyond the end of the current contract year is not guaranteed. RMHP has contracted with Medicare to provide benefits since 1977.
